We do not do save while active, in which everyone gets off the system for 5
minutes, everything is check pointed, then everyone can get back on while the
backup is run based on the status as of the check pointing. We do not do
this because we do not have enough disk space to handle data since the check
pointing, until the backup completed. However, if you have disk space to
spare, you might be able to trade off so that there is significantly less
time for a backup but more disk space needed to back it up, so that you can
then seriously consider more backups.

With excess disk space, and depending on how your disk is partitioned, there
may be value in seeking out any tape copying schemes. At one time we had 2
tape drives ... 8 mm & QIC ... you might check on the pricing. There is the
capability to copy from tape to tape with minimum impact on the hard disk
space, when you have more than one tape drive.
