I think there's another reason.  IBM has invested a massive amount in AS/400
R&D (I wish I could remember how many $100M).  No company spends that kind
of money on something they think is insignificant.  $100,000,000 is not
chump change--even for IBM. ;-)

I, personally, wouldn't even speculate on how this happened.

Ah Ya,.   I saw it on Infoworld a couple of days ago.

Last few Olympics, IBM had some AS400s running part
of the massive operation. According to the current  web site,
there are 390s running the main scoring system. the  web is
all RS/6000 SP running WebSphere & MQ Series.  Games
management is all Netfinity. Statistics is RS6000  w/Lotus Domino
and MQ Series. It's  a shame IBM could not demonstrate their
"complete" server line. Perhaps they are just  missing from the
web site "technology" page.  Jim
