agreed.  but a lot of businesses do use things like quickbooks or
peachtree.

i got a flyer from manta in the mail today.  when you compare what it
costs to going to hastings and buying 'learn visual basic in 21 days'
for $35-$40, well, that's a problem with some folks.
  
the truth isn't what matters, but what the perception is.  we all
struggle with saving $100 on a cheaper moniter, or whether to buy an ibm
terminal or do you go with brand-x?  (an example from the dumb terminal
days).  never mind that you use the terminal for years, and the $100
will be spent many times if the thing is unreliable!

most student learn it on your own types can not afford the $7000 for the
manta software, let alone an as/400 to learn on.  and as/400 courses at
the vo-tech level seems to have vanished.

so the new generation of programmers are microsoft types, and anti
as/400.  

i miss the old manuals.  once upon a time, ibm's manuals were second to
none...
