You should probably only be validating the main DNS.. in your example that
would be ibm.com.

We have a domain, let's call it companya.com.  Now, I can send mail from my
as400, (as400.companya.com) to you and if you did a ping, you'd get nothing.

Don't mess with subdomains.  They're all handled by the main "domain"
system.
