I heard this reported from Einstein.  Apparently there was an interview with 
Einstein, and the
reporter after the interview asked him for his telephone number in case there 
were any more
questions.  Einstein said he didn't know his phone number but would have his 
assistant give
it to him.  The question was put why didn't Einstein, a known genious, know his 
own phone number
and the reply was that he didn't memorize anything that was easily looked up.

Whether this is a true quote from Einstein, or an urban legend, I don't know.

Someone else worded it more elegantly, but the way one of my teachers put it
was "Never memorize anything you can look up easily."  Of course if it's
something you use every day, you may memorize it whether you want to or not.
If I could only purge the Brinnell/Rockwell C hardness number conversion
chart that I haven't used in nearly ten years from my memory and replace it
with something useful...
