You make sense excepting a detail. Have you tried Java? WebSphere? cgi
with RPG? Visual Age RPG? XTML? HTML?

The truth is the current AS/400 runs very nice GUIs in addition to still
doing green screen. Can we really blame IBM if we won't step up to the
plate and try out the new stuff they are offering?? The truth is, more
new stuff comes out for the AS/400 every quarter than one programmer can
learn, so the problem isn't lack from IBM but rather lethargy from us.
Also, there's those managers that won't let busy programmers "waste time"
on the new stuff.

Sorry guys, I know some of you will flame me for this,<RANT> but Joel has
hit the nail on the head. WE know that green screens are fine and do the
job
admirably. The rest of the IT world doesn't accept that. Perception is
EVERYTHING. It's no use sticking our heads in the sand and saying "Well it
works so I don't need to change it". Lets Lobby IBM for a REAL ground up
GUI. Not a screen scraper, not a 5250 graphiciser, a REAL drag and drop
GUI.
I know we don't need it but if the AS/400 (I/500) is going to be PERCEIVED
as a 21st century machine we have to lose the green screen image.</RANT>

Alistair steps down off his soapbox and shuffles away.

My ex boss recently left a job as CIO of an internet retailer because he
was
asked to replace AS/400 based systems with an Oracle product. In the
months
since he left they have spent several million dollars and the Oracle
product
isn't anywhere near ready. The AS/400 systems worked, but had those nasty
looking screens.

I don't think the moral is that the AS/400 is inherently better, but more
the perception thing people have been talking about lately. My ex boss
doesn't have a religious committment to the AS/400, but he prefers things
that work and thought that installing the Oracle product would be career
suicide. He wouldn't have batted an eyelash if he had any confidence in
the
Oracle product.

AS/400:
         Checker
         16" Softball
         Sidney Bechet

Win 2000:
Toyota Camry (4 cyl with gold tone trim)
         NFL
         No Doubt
