You can use STRITF to directly talk to the modem on any release.  Once
you've sent the proper commands, be sure to send AT&W to write the settings
into permanent memory.  Of course, those settings get wiped by AT&F...

The V4R1 reference Dave makes refers to the line description having a
parameter for the initialisation string.
