I assume that when you say "julian date field" you mean a character or
numeric field, and "julian system date field" is a date type field.

How about

    C    *JUL0    MOVE    DATE1      DATE2

The zero after the *JUL tells MOVE that DATE1 does not have a date separator
character in it.

Another potential problem is that if the "julian date field" actually
contains "0980001" it _is_ an invalid julian date. *JUL expects yy/ddd,
*LONGJUL expects ccyy/ddd.
