AS400 is finally getting some nice press.

All of you have heard about AS/400 taking first place against its
competition in three industry standard performance benchmarks including
TPC-C, SPECjbb2000, and Domino NotesBench. Now, a recent report from Giga
provides more proof why customers and ISVs should consider AS/400 as the IT
solution to business needs. The report states: "Based on the performance
scalability results across a collection of industry standard commercial
benchmarks, the new AS/400 should be considered an effective
high-performance server platform for select commercial workloads."

InfoWorld - July 31, 2000

1- The platform that pays
"Low cost of ownership combined with leading-edge hardware and software
components, state-of-the-art Web technologies, and impressive performance
push IBM?s AS/400 platform to the forefront of computing in the digital
economy," InfoWorld writes. "IBM?s venerable AS/400 server has become the
subject of renewed interest among businesses seeking a reliable, scalable
platform for the new millennium."

2- AS/400 leaps from 'legacy' to e-business excellence
"IBM?s well-established AS/400 now blends leading-edge hardware
architecture with a solid operating system and plentiful application
software; these prove a fitting match for Web-based computing," the article
says. "This compelling server platform can be used to consolidate server
resources, increase scalability and availability, and support core business
functions on the middle tier or back-end with a positive return on
investment."

3- AS/400 hardware breakthrough raises bar
"Technology advances in AS/400 servers promise strong performance gains for
e-business applications," the article explains. "The newest generation of
IBM?s AS/400 has some unique attributes under the hood that could net a
significant performance boost for your business."

4- Latest OS/400 bolsters e-business
"The newest version of the OS/400 operating system brings more partitions
and better Java, UNIX, and database support," InfoWorld writes. "It?s
actually a very reliable, open, scalable, and easy-to-use server that?s
suitable for all kinds of enterprise applications, whether they be batch or
interactive workloads, ERP systems, or business intelligence suites."

5- AS/400 leads the league in Java performance
"The AS/400 proves a strong contender for executing high-volume, Web
application strategies," the article says. "If the results of these
benchmarks are any indication of how well the AS/400 can perform in a
Java-based, Web-serving, e-commerce world, then CTOs and other business
leaders should be taking a hard look at the AS/400 as a platform to
reliably host their e-business applications."

6- Riding the wireless wave with the AS/400
"IBM's venerable e-business server dovetails neatly with corporate wireless
strategies to meet users' needs," InfoWorld explains. "The AS/400 has
completed its shift from legacy system to excellent e-business solution.
No matter the method you choose, the AS/400 will bring e-business
applications and data to end-users, customers, and business partners
regardless of their location or their mobile device."

7- IBM aims to reinvent the AS/400 for e-biz
When asked, "How will new Web technologies manifest themselves in an
AS/400," AS/400 Chief Scientist Frank Solitis said, "If you look at what's
really happened the last couple of years within IBM, the focus has been on
the Web, the Internet, business-to-business, and so forth...If you look
over the last couple of years, what we've put into the AS/400 and some of
the things we've talked about that we're doing in the future, that's
clearly what it's aimed at. The whole WebSphere family ties it all
together."

8- Changing perceptions: IBM?s AS/400 morphs into powerful, dynamic
e-business server
"The AS/400 is a multifaceted server capable of fulfilling a myriad of
business needs regardless of the size of the enterprise or the tasks that
are thrown at it," the article says. "The AS/400 appears ready to provide
some stiff competition for its server rivals."
