Whether its TCP or SNA or whatever, if you really want
to know if the other side is alive, you need some sort of
polling transaction (user application) to monitor. Whether
you send it every minute, 5 minutes or 10 seconds is your
choice. The app looks like:
Send
wait for reply (with a timeout)
no reply - error (msg, pager, dial ...)
    else
reply  - do nothing
sleep for xx, then go to Send
Probably want a monitor pgm for Sysopr messages, or if
a msgq associated with DB2 jobs.
If you have many transaction a minute or hour, this is a
minimal addition. I've done this for DDM and it worked
fine.
