Hi Dan -

>Is there a simple way to SCAN for special characters? I am writing a

1. Assuming you are talking about RPG, this should really be in the RPG
list.

2. To go at it from a different slant, would it be easier to edit for what
characters you want to ALLOW rather than those you want to prohibit? CHECK
or CHECKR can be used to easily check that only allowed characters are in a
character field.

3. If you do really want to check for prohibited characters, you could
shorten the code a little in RPG IV with something like:

   if    (%scan('!':testfield) + %scan('@':testfield) + %scan('#':testfield)
+
          %scan('$':testfield) + %scan('%':testfield)) > *zero
   exfmt youdummy
   endif

where you are checking for prohibited characters !, @, #, $, and %.
