If IBM is going to "abandon" the AS/400 then I would think there would be
an even stronger need for an organization like COMMON as a real "users
group". I hesitate to draw a parallel with "Star Trek", but if enough
people organize and keep pushing, IBM may be forced to bring back the
AS/400 brand.
Maybe we need to turn COMMON into a "guerrilla marketing organization". If
IBM won't advertise the strengths of the AS/400 and what makes it superior
to the standard Wintel box, they can't stop someone else from telling the
story !
Maybe the message of http://www.ctlaltdel.net/ (check out the eXtreme
links at the bottom of the page if you haven't seen them) can be spread to
the masses ! ;-)

What a depressing thought, John... Even if the rebranding occurs, and IBM
continues to fail at advertising what was the AS/400, won't there still be
a
midrange user community with a lot in common that would still want to
continue
meeting and learning from one another? Surely the user community doesn't
have
to vanish even if the AS/400 ends up in a masquerade costume, does it???

I'll be in Baltimore, but I sure don't want it to be the last conference...

What does everyone else think???
