Title: RE: AS/400 Back to Back connectivity

We have an F50 (3.2) connected to a 620 (4.4) using modem eliminator.  The company didn't want to invest $$$ since the F50 is going away in about a year.  We have about 25 users passing through the F50 (from 2 E10's& E35 ) to the 620 to use JDE and we don't have many problems anymore (1 E10 & E35 have gone away).  We initialy did when the F50 was being utilized in paralelle w/ the 620 in the process of our "go live" stage but now it's just a passthru machine until we get all the history off and other older programs off that we need.  I guess it would depend on how much you utilize both machines.  Most of our problems were snding spl files back and forth.  It was a real "old fashioned" hassle.  Wouldn't recommend it for long term, but we have been doing it for 1.5 years already.

CISC and RISC

Compared to the 730, the F60 doesn't offer much in the way of benefit.  This
looks a lot like you have it so you want to use it.  I keep thinking, if you
use it, you have to support it and that supporting it may be a pain in the
rear and it might cost a lot of maintenance money.  Are you really sure you
want to do that?

A 170 or 2xx system will coexist better, be faster, cost less money to buy
and support, have more disk capacity, and use less floor space, power and
cooling.  The F60 was pretty hot in 1992 or 1993 but now it is just a
fossil.  I suggest that you check out the money you are spending for
software and support for that fossil.  The 170 might look pretty good.

Assuming that I can't talk you out of this ...

If you can, connect them using 100 mb Ethernet.  It is fast and clean.
Forget about token ring.

File transfers are a toss-up.  You can use SNADS or FTP.  I like them both.
SNADS is a little easier to program in CL but FTP is quick and easy and rock
solid.

After using various flavors of TN5250, it like it a lot better than
STRPASTHR.

I think you can get DDM to work over almost anything.

I don't know how good the TCP support is on the F-model.  If it is really
bad, I would probably use all SNA utilities just to avoid problems.

Subject: AS/400 Back to Back connectivity

Hi

We have 2 AS/400 machines which has to be connected Back to Back.
1. Machine 1 --> IBM AS/400 Model 730 running V4R4
2. Machine 2 --> IBM AS/400 Model F60 running V3R4

Could you please suggest the best of connecting these machine to reap
the benefits of both.

a) We have a finance application running on Model 730 and in offline
data is also entered into the F60. As a day end process, we move data
from F60 into 730.
b) As a backup plan we would like to maintain few files on F60 regularly
downloaded from 730 (day end). This should help us in keeping things
alive when 730 is down.
c) The size of the data being moved around the machines will be approx.
400-500 MB a day (worst scenario).

Any help on this will help us in enhancing the current scenario.

Thanks in advance
