As an intermittent contributor to midrange-l, but active reader,
I tend to agree that there is a fair amount of e-litter.  On the
few occasions I have (had the time and) replied to questions, I
have mostly answered the question-asker directly.  This (I believe)
makes the reply back quicker than the 2-hour-ish turn-around of 
midrange-l, it also reduces the e-litter.

On the whole I find that the level of e-litter is tolerable for the 
'grains of gold' it contains.  The grains of gold have saved my 
employer money, since each call to IBM Assist/400 costs 
circa GB£200; I don't waste company time smoking, so if a
little time is lost processing irrelevant midrange-l emails, I reckon 
that they come out in profit over all.
