Don't forget about limitation of maximum jobs in system:  140,000 before
your system locks up tighter than a drum (I'm talking the number on the
WRKSYSSTS screen - doesn't include hidden system jobs - real number is
around 156,000).  If you've ever had this happen, you know it'll take your
all-powerful AS/400 to its knees.  Control block tables fill up...ugh.

Eric, this is what I've found in the "fine" manual The System
Administrator's Companion to AS/400 Availability and Recovery Redbook
(SG24-2161):

For practical reasons I guess the question is how You are going to locate
the files, doing a directory search on a large number of files will
probably give you response times that have to measured using your calendar.

     What is the maximum number of files that can be stored in an IFS
     directory? We're looking at storing imaged documents (tiff) on the
     400. TFM has not provoded the answer yet......
