If you don't want to edit a single-field record in hex (and I guess
that it is why you don't find 
WRKDBF good enough), then you have to define (somewhere) the fields.
Why not do it 
in DDS. If you will continue to use your S/36-system you will have to
do it at some time 
anyway. 'First need to edit' is as good time to do this as any.
