Modem's will decide the speed they are able to run at. I assume you are
talking about a dial 56k modem, which is very unlikely to reach anything
approaching that on a 2 wire line. I know many folks are gonna say their
pc with a $39 modem can do it, but the reality is a lot different. A
7852-400 is quoted at 33.6 on a dial line, which I think can be reached
under certain conditions, but some of these blazing speeds that I 
read about simply can't be done on public two wire lines with any
regularity.

Give it a shot and give us a report on how they do. I'm curious to hear
the results. The comm port doesn't care unless you drown it with more
data than it can take in a burst.
