Only sub string your key fields and leave the entire record as one field.
Make sure the entire field is the first. Then break up the record as in any
internally defined file using the one field.

Presumably when u say non DDS'ed u mean internally described.

The obvious option is to split the main field up using SST (substring)
command in dds.
only problem is all fields will be char & you will have to de-code packed
fields in your program.

Not very neat I have to say.

Any one any better suggestions ?

Mike

e.g.
     A R NEWFMT PFILE(FILE)
     A FIELD1 R I SST(FIELD 1 4)
     A FIELD2 R I SST(FIELD 5 2)
     etc
     A K FIELD1
