  • Subject: 2748 DASD controller - A word of warning.

Dear All
I have just discovered (the hard way) that an incompatability exists between
a #2748 and# 2809 cards.
Basically, (on a 7xx - in a PCI expansion unit #9329 / #9330) if you put a
2748 in C16, you can't have a #2809 in C15, it must instead be a #2824.

I can't absolutely be sure, as i've since chucked them, but i don't think
this wasn't in the install instructions for the #2748, nor is it in older
versions of ibm's configurator. I did eventually find it in System Builder
, under the Base IOP (page 41).

Everything worked in this configuration for 5 days. I then had a disk fail
on Friday, which i thought was an isolated incident and got it replaced.
Today i had to force-power-off because of a machine hang caused by tape
drive problem, and when the system came up, all disks under the #2748 were
showing as missing/non-configured.

After clearing the IOP cache (luckily i ipled the system previous to the
tape drive episode, so i know there was nothing important in there) the
disks came back, but i now keep getting main storage dumps - something to do
with the LIC detecting an OS problem - reinstall the OS time.

I'm not entirely sure that in this case the effect above directly follows
the cause, but i'm changing that #2809 at the very first opportunity i get.
Beware!

Regards,
Stuart
