JJJJJJJUUUUUUUUSSSSSSTTTTTTT a little outside on this one!

The card Chris describes is the FSIOP/..../Integrated Netfinity Server.

The MFIOP (Multi Function Input Output Processor) is the REAL processor in
charge of the AS/400. While it does not do the calculations that run your
programs it does much of the low level I/O work in the system (particularly
small
ones). THis is the processor that starts IPLs and checks out the hardware at
IPL
time. It handles the load source disk unit, and and in many newer processors
many
of the base disks including in some cases RAID functionality.
The actual hardware of the MFIOP has changed over the AS/400 generations of
course. In SPD implementations it is a card that often holds the ECS Comm line,
the base Workstation Controller and could be replaced like any other card. In
today's PCI machines the MFIOP is actually the PCI BUS 0 main card (Replacing it
is slightly more dificult now!) For LPAR configurations you need an MFIOP for
each LPAR.
