Is your 3590 directly attached?(scsi) or is going through a network
somehow(adsm or something).

My last full system backup only took 4 hours and I am using a mlr1 1/4" tape
drive at about 50GB,  Thats about 12 GB per hour. Which is about what the
mlr1 is rate at 10-12 GB per hour I was told.

With that said you could backup your system faster with a 1/4" drive. You
should be able to smoke that with a 3590.  Rated at 40 to 60GB per hour say
2 to 3 hours should be all it should take. And just think at V4R5 that is
supposed to go up as high as 120GB per hour.

My guess you had something wrong before.
I may be wrong, but we just flew in IBM'rs and other venders in from Texas
and Rochester to have a discussion on tape drives, and this was all from
them.
