Is this RPGIV? Operational descriptors are not supported for numeric fields. 
You can 
find an explanation in the RPG programmers guide.   This is one of RPG's 
biggest 
limitations.  I have heard that this is caused by a lack of support from 
Rochester.  I 
don't see why the clever RPG compiler guys can't perform an end-run.

Does anyone have an example of the Retrieve Operational Descriptor API they
can share, or rather the way you use the results? Specifically, I'm looking
to determine if a parameter is numeric or character (varying size), and its
length. From the API manual, I suppose that the DESCTYPE will be 2, but the
DATATYPE doesn't really tell me if the field is character or numeric.
