Dave,

Gonna have to dig deep to remember this one. On the System/36 you have
to configure a Peer type of connection to the AS/400 and then enable it.
You don't need to create any devices on the S/36. When the Peer
connection is active you can use the PASSTHRU (am I remembering this
correctly?) procedure to start a session on the AS/400. 

On the AS/400 side you have to allow passthrough users (system values
QRMTSIGN and QAUTOVRT). If passthrough is allowed you should be able to
get an AS/400 session from the S/36.

I think there may be an old Redbook that describes how to set this up.
