How about forgetting animals altogether?  I'd suggest a human -- Strom 
Thurmond.  Think about it -- every time you hear the name, somebody says "I 
thought he was dead".  He's been around a long time, yet continues to work.  
He's based on many outdated concepts, yet manages to adapt to changing 
circumstance.  The people of the great state of South Carolina voted him in 
yet again, despite the fact that many thought that he would die prior to the 
end of his term.  Like a bad penny, both RPG and Strom keep coming back :)...
