I wrote a program ages ago that read the labels and multiplied the number of
blocks by the block size. Not sure what happened to it, or even if it
worked, but it should be simple to do.

Perhaps another way would be to analyse the tape volume stats before/after
using the tape - thus catching volume errors as well.
