Of course the other reason it is unlikely is the very limited access to
information on the underlying hardware and software that runs the
AS/400.
Without that its like a very long walk up a very steep hill.

This is totally wrong.  Nobody (that I know of) has 
successfully distributed
one, but it would be possible to do.

That said, there are several things that make virus's on our AS/400's
unlikely.  The first is just the number of systems.  There are about
50,000+- AS/400's in the USA.  How many 10's of Millions WinTel 
machines are
there?

This along makes it hard for the virus to propagate.

But it CAN be done!
