Are you sure that you are not running Queries from Hell on this file.  When you
do a WRKACTJOB, do you see any jobs with an IDX-filename being displayed?

You may want to convert your indexes from the MAX4GB to MAX1TB, because of the
way the locking/seizing  is done on records.  Its is much more efficient.
