I hope most people know when I'm kidding and when I'm
serious. I rather dislike having to add "smileys" to
point out the difference.

I never said that the average home user should be using
Linux, at least not yet. We may yet see a distro that's
easy enough for novices, but I don't think anything today
qualifies for that.

On the other hand, if you mean "each of us" to mean us
techy geeks who subscribe to this mailing list, then yes,
at the very least all of us should at least get some
familiarity with Linux. It's an important part of our
jobs to be at least partly knowledgable about current
trends and technologies. Linux is big, and getting
bigger. Last weeks announcement from IBM is yet another
sign of that.

To link up with another thread of discussion, this might
well relate to Roger's rumors about a Unix environment on
the AS/400. (Now, I have no idea whether or not it's
true - if I knew anything, I'd probably keep my mouth
shut!)

What does Linux mean to the future of the AS/400? What
does it mean to the future of all systems offered by IBM?
Here's one way of looking at things: If the same
operating system were supported on all IBM platforms from
the PC's all the way up to the big enterprise systems,
we would have source compatibility across our whole range!

Cheers! Hans
