The huge improvement to my mind was the CRT display.  Remember the 6 line 
by 40 character backwards display that was placed vertically inside the 
desktop and shined up onto a 45-degree mirror so that we'd have no direct 
exposure to the tube's rays?   What an odd thing it was to use the 
backspace key and see the mistyped characters actually disappear.  That 
sure saved a lot of trees. 

(for those that don't remember, we had to type directly to the printer to 
send commands.  When OCL came along we could type a file name and the file 
would actually type the command for us onto the printer, overcoming many 
typos and messed up commands.   Was it OCL?  That doesn't sound like the 
correct term.)
