I'm not arguing whether it's right or wrong for IBM to require a properly
licensed machine in this circumstance, only warning of the potential 
consequences
if it's not legally licensed. Unfortunately, IBM has no way of being sure how a
machine will be used (whether for learning the AS/400 which is a VERY good thing
and ought to be encouraged/subsidized!!!! or for running a business) . However,
if the machine has a legal V4 license it's entirely possible it can be
transferred with the machine. I just can't remember the ins and outs of whether 
a
model 400 which shipped with V3 originally can transfer an upgraded V4 license. 
A
V4 OS/400 license does transfer if it shipped originally with the machine. I
can't recall if other licensed programs work the same way.
