I couldn't agree more. I don't know of any consultant/contractor that is 
working, thinking how can I make this project so that only I can 
work/maintain it? That's totally absurd. If you were that stupid, the company 
that is using a consultant, always has more work to do. If you're tied up on 
a single project, they'd bring in another, competent consultant, for other 
projects and would soon see how stupid you are. 

Most consultants are hard woking, consientious programmers worrying more 
about how to do a good job, than where their next contract is coming from. 

One could make your same argument for in-house programmers. That is, the 
worse they do their job, the more job security they have. This too is absurd.
