In the UK we do not (yet) have any age discrimination legislation, and in 
any case it would not apply to consultants, only to employees and job 
applicants. It is common for job ads to specify that candidates will be 
in their mid-twenties, early thirties etc.

Going freelance has traditionally been a way of side-stepping the ageism 
that undoubtedly exists here. FWIW a fellow contractor on a recent project 
is of normal retirement age and he's one of the best I've ever worked 
with.
