I don't believe that Joel was making a statement of NT superiority. 
Actually, from the earlier posting I read, it quoted the article which
gave a convoluted -IBM already has what NT aspires to be, so the AS/400
is a contender-?  How biased can a reporter get? <g>  It's sort of like
saying that when Russia launched Sputnik, that put them in second place!

Not to go too far off on a tangent, but I recall reading "We present the
news, they present propaganda."  This was from the USSR.

IMHO, technical superiority has -no- relationship to marketing success.

I concur with your statement, and it does coincide with Joel's, it's all
about the marketing.

The Beta/VHS technical superiority vs market dominance should be a
business school teaching model.

The same could be said about OS/2, Token Ring, and I pray NOT the
AS/400.
