Just to throw another iron in the fire -- you can get modems off eBay
for the AS/400.  I recently bought a pair of IBM 7857-017's for about
$50 each including shipping.  For the price, they are hard to beat.

There have also been some Motorola UDS and MultiTech modems listed, as
well as several varieties of IBM sync modems.

I haven't seen any V.34 modems though, so if you absolutely need top
speed you will have to pay for it elsewhere.
