RE: changing two fields in a file

J through R in the last byte of the field are interpreted as a minus sign.
I learned this on a support call at 2AM so it kind of stuck with me.  I
can't remember the full story, but I've been told it has to do with punch
cards.  Gives "backward compatibility" a different spin.
