the problems would be with packed and binary data.  and if the software
came originally from a 36, i would bet there's packed data

i've always used the environment.  it's more transparent.  

the gotcha there would be you have to recompile everything, and that
appears to be a problem.  but since you aren't working on a '36' anyway,
you're going to have to do that regardless.  so you might as well just
use the environment.

ps - you have my sympathy.  it sounds like a mess.
