We were having the same problem with networked HP4500N color laser
printer.  It is attached via a HP Jet Direct Card.

I found the problem by going into the HP Jet direct software and
connecting to this printer and looking under the TCP/IP values and
finding the timeout parameter was set to 90 seconds.  This value can NOT
be set from the front panel.
