  • Subject: PC, internet, to AS400 via ISP -- no TN5250e
  • From: Jerome Draper <jdraper@xxxxxxx>

I have a situation where an AS400 is on the internet via an ISP, dsu/csu,
tokenring router, and mau. The AS400 is on the same mau. The ISP has
assigned a static IP address which is defined on the AS400. (I didn't
design this, BTW). I can ping the AS400 after being connected via dialup
networking to my ISP (no relation) and I can telnet to the AS400 using
Synapse NetWolf (TN5250e).

Locally, I can telnet with NetWolf to the AS400 and all of the TN5250e
functions work fine (device naming conventions, virtual printing, and
auto-signon) but none work in the ISP dialup situation described above. In
looking at the IP trace we see that we never were queried by the AS400
about whether we are TN5250e capable or not and that is why none of the
TN5250e advanced functions work.

I suspect there might be a proxy server/firewall in between that is
throwing away anything it doesn't recognize as valid telnet protocol but no
one seems to know if there is/isn't a proxy server involved.

Anyone see this before?

Thanks in advance.

Jerry
