1) V3R7 is obsolete and unsupported now. Migrate.

2) You're going to open a holy war by stating that Domino is a
better product that OV/400. Domino doesn't have a mail merge
function able to fully run from the 400 without the use of a PC.
IBM's recommendation for mail merge is Word or a third party
product. Therefore the rumor is that OV is extended through V4R5.
IBM doesn't like integrated solutions and thinks running all of
your business from the 400 is a ridiculous idea, (sarcasm).

3) Haven't heard anything about shared folders becoming obsolete.
If so, use other areas of the IFS. You don't have to just use the
/QDLS directory. Do a WRKLNK '/*' for a list of directories.
There is some additional overhead in QDLS. Much more tracking is
done on who and what did anything to an item. Perhaps this is the
rub. Anyone have an official statement available? I've opened up
incident 91305,500 to determine this. A copy of your email is in
this incident.

Subject: Y2k, OV/400 & Shared Folders question

This was sent to me by a colleague:

>The System Operator told me that we needed to get all
>of our information on the AS/400 in shared folders off
>because IBM would not be making this function Y2K
>compliant. L know that I have heard that Office Vision
>is not going to be converted, but didn't know that shared
>folders were included. I am wondering if she is confusing
>information meant only for the Office Vision programs
>with information that she thinks includes Office Vision and
>Shared Folders.

This client is using V3R7. My first comment was that I was
sure that V3R7 (like V3R2) was Y2K compliant. I also said
that V3R7 is obsolete and should be upgraded to V4. I
told him that I knew nothing of OV/400 not being Y2K
compliant and it was being phased out because Domino
was a much better solution (I also seem to remember a
recent magazine article that said OV/400 had been given
a repreive). I don't see how the demise of OV/400 has
anything to do with the QDLS file system anyway.

Can anyone shed some light here? TIA

Joe Teff
