With the price of disk, and the amount that you can put on a machine, if you 
need
to worry about extra disk space before an upgrade, you probably have more 
serious
problems with your system than warrants doing an upgrade.  Remember the old
saying, "If you have to ask, you cant afford it".  Well that goes for OS/400
upgrades as well, other than V2R3 to V3R1, most additional disk requirements
during upgrades have been negligible (Unless you are adding additional LPPs).
