  • Subject: V4R4 Upgrade Woes

Well folks,

Just spent 8 hours upgrading from V4R3 to V4R4.  The good news is things are running.

Just 2 problems:

Halfway through, the CD ROM stopped working.  The console had asked for the 4th CD and the ROM refused to eject.  No lights, nuthun!  I had gone to get a drink and use the can, so I missed when the console first put up the message.

Turns out that the system still thing the CD is working.  IBM tech support says its getting alot of these calls.  Of course, its not a hardware problem.  Apparently, if there is too much time between when the change CD message is displayed and when it actually gets done, the CD turns off!  So cancel the automatic upgrade and start the manual process (after an IPL to get the CD back!)

Moral of that story:  No bathroom breaks allowed when upgrading V4R3 to V4R4.

Problem 2:

When loading the PTF package, the system keeps asking for the second CD, even though it is in the CD ROM.  REAL FUN!  Turns out the 2nd CD is mis-labeled.  The outside lettering says disk 2 but the CD player reads disk 1.  Tech support says to order up a new set of CDs for the PTFs.  Hope there is nothing out there that needed those PTFs that didn't load!

There is a new set of PTFs release on 6/18/99 for V4R4.  Let's hope it fixes some things!
