  • Subject: Data compression on MRL3 tape drive

We just got a new 720 and we got an MRL3 tape drive with it which is
capable of backing up 25GB uncompressed and 50GB compressed. When we
issue any of the SAV* commands, we use DTACPR(*YES) parameter, but we
receive an information message telling us it's not doing the
compression. The message we receive follows:

Message ID . . . . . . . . . : CPI3818

Message file . . . . . . . . : QCPFMSG

  Library . . . . . . . . . : QSYS

Message . . . . : Data compression not performed.

Cause . . . . . : Value *YES was specified on the DTACPR parameter.
Data
compression is not performed when optimum block size is used.

Any ideas as to why we would be getting this and what it means about the
"optimum block size"?

Thanks,
Dave
