Well, I think it all depends on the instructor--  We've had several people
working for us who have used "Splat!" for Asterisk.  Myself, I've been
known to just call them "Stars."   (:   Which is how library STARBASE got
its name...

As far as 'tick' is concerned, I've used 'tick marks,'  ("a small dot,
mark, or check, as used to mark off an item on a list, serve as a reminder,
etc.").
