Paul,
  You hit the nail right on the head here.  Arrays in RPG are simple "scan
the list" constructs.  That means that if you have 50 elements in the
array, an average lookup will take 25 comparisons to find a match.  A "no
match" will always take 50 comparisons.  Here in the 90's, I would never
recommend using an array to save time - an AS400 is a very different animal
than the S/3/34/36.  What worked great then may be a performance killer
now.
