The device connects into the keyboard cable, the 5250 type device
doesn't know, or care, how data gets into a prompted field.  No software
changes needed.

AFAIK, they all still work pretty much the same way and reading ability
and price are the only difference.

Portables, on the other hand (pun intended), tied to a wireless network
add new dimensions!
