Can't read the story till I get home from work, but this may be related to
the controller's ability to cache disk updates to improve performance.
Until the cache has been written back to the disk, the disk is invalid by
itself. I've run into a problem like this before while trying to swap disks
between machines. The system detects that you have done something stupid
and won't let you proceed.
