With the supply of programmers so tight, it is a lot easier to get into IT
now.

I work for a consulting firm. The owners of the firm decided a year ago that
competing for experienced people was not going to provide enough people.
They implemented a program where they would hire a couple people a
month into a training program. These people are brought in and go through
a few months of training before being placed as entry level programmers. I
spend one day a week in the office working with these people. The hire
dates are staggered so that there is always one person in the later stages
of the program when a new person starts so that person can be a resource
for the new person. I find these people to be bright self-starters that are
very hungry and quite interested in learning new things.
