My echo on PID is that they used to offer the LIPI's (licensed internal
program interface-??) to vendors working to develop products to run on
AS/400's.  This was great because it encouraged innovation.

Sadly, I heard that when ole Microsoft wanted to subscribe to the LIPI's
for their SNA Server and Windows related products IBM decided NO and that
they would simply discontinue that availability of the LIPI's altogether
since they couldn't really provide them to everyone but MS.  

There was some talk about starting up the LIPI system again but nothing has
happened.
