The Internet is a winner for this use.  It eliminates the concept of
distance from data communications.  Our company has helped > 30 companies
do exactly this.  You have to wade through some issues of potential
security risk, but the payback is certainly worth it!

In terms of stability, you have to remember that the Internet was
originally constructed with the design objective of enabling government
facilities to communicate after a nuclear attack.  If a portion of the
backbone is busy, traffic is routed to another route.  Our customers use it
every day with hundreds of users & no hiccups!

In my opinion, I would have to think long & hard before I recommended a
private leased line again.
