There are no exceptions to using SQL's "fun" when the SQL program product
is not installed.  SELECT functionality can be matched using the Query
(QQQQRY) API or the Process Extended Dynamic SQL (QSQPRCED) API; likewise
either API (among others) could be used by a user-written SQL based
precompiler in order to provide support for imbedded SQL.  AS/400 development
has been very careful to ensure that the SQL program product is not the only
method by which one can access OS/400 based function.

In order to use SQL functionality there is no need to purchase the SQL
program product.  Many users may feel however that the program product
is a good investment relative to writing their own SQL (or other DB
language) based front end due to the up front cost of learning the
APIs and then building their own HLL precompilers and/or interactive
prompting support.
